A hip replacement can be life changing. Your new hip will perform just like the real thing, allowing you to enjoy a wide range of activities.
To get the best result from your hip replacement, you’ll need to follow your aftercare advice carefully. It may take a few months for things to feel normal – or better than normal – but it will be worth the wait.
Here’s a guide to give you an idea of when you can expect to be back on your feet, walking, running and perhaps even skiing.
If there’s anything we haven’t covered, or you have any questions, please get in touch.
Day 1
On the day of your operation, you’ll be out of bed and taking your first few steps with the help of a physiotherapist.
Day 2–3
90% of our patients go home within two days of their surgery. 40% of patients return home within just 24 hours through our ‘enhanced recovery’ programme.
You’ll be able to move around at home with the help of a frame or stick, and when you’re feeling ready, even climb the stairs.
Day 5
By day five you’ll be walking more confidently with the help of a stick.
Week 2
Once we’ve taken your stitches or staples out, you’ll be able to enjoy baths and showers again.
Week 4–6
Within 4–6 weeks you’ll be able to walk longer distances without an aid and start driving short distances.
Week 6
After six weeks, you can return to work. If your job involves heavy lifting or it’s very active, you may need to wait a bit longer. Mr Nirav Shah will give you a precise timeframe.
You’ll also be able to take part in sports such as cycling, swimming and golf. It may take a few more weeks until you’re ready for 18 holes. Just do what feels comfortable.
Week 8–10
8–10 weeks after your surgery you’ll be able to test drive your new hip with some gentle running. You can gradually increase your speed and distance over time.
Month 3
After 3 months yogis can return to the matt. You’ll be able to do most poses but listen to your body and don’t push yourself too far too soon.
Month 9
You’ll make a full recovery within 3–6 months, but you’ll need to wait 9 months to return to high impact sports such as skiing.
Eventually there will be no limitations on what you and your new hip can do, so enjoy your new-found freedom.
